Test your might: Parallels v. VMWare Fusion

FATALITY! VM Fusion wins! Removed Parallels 3.0 as my virtual machine running Windows XP Pro and installed VMWare Fusion 1.1.1 over it. Immediate speed and performance improvement with fewer resources. I’d thrown 2GB at Parallels and it was still a bit sluggish. I was much faster at 512MB on Fusion. Go figure. If you have [...]

Observations #44324

Good office task seating apparently matters. Is it worth paying a few hundred dollars for? Hmm.
I am supremely sick and tired of this winter. This is the snowiest winter in recent memory, certainly the most in 8 years, and possibly the snowiest in 30 years. It just dumps snow and more snow on us. [...]

On Nader

In 1996, still living in SoCal, I voted Nader, because I could not in good conscience vote for Clinton or Bob Dole, on the eve of what I and my colleagues believed would be a massive national assault on civil rights, immigrants, and the poor, which saw the widespread abandonment of those groups by the [...]

First 24 hours with my new laptop

The shiny new white polycarb Macbook has arrived. The memory upgrade was painless. As is customary, I used the Migration Assistant to move my apps and stuff from the old Aluminum Powerbook G4 to this machine and it was somewhat painless, except the big apps like Adobe and Macromedia and Microsoft no longer work. I [...]

Listen: Mike Doughty, “Golden Delicious” (2008)

It’s tough to top a tremendously talented effort like the one that Haughty Melodic turned out to be and so, it’s inevitable that the latest solo album from Mike Doughty invites comparisons to its predecessor. That’s unfair: I think artists go on journeys and grow during their career and they invite us with them as [...]

Valuable lessons for the young folk

The first lesson is, don’t take naked pictures of yourself doing, uh, naked things with your naked girlfriends. The second is, if you must do this, don’t leave it on your laptop, trash it or back it up on an external, encrypted drive and lock it in a safe somewhere, like, a bank. The third [...]

In praise of semicolons

There was a story in the NYT the other day about the proper use of semicolons in subway advertising, among other places. It’s one of my most favorite forms of punctuation.

Tracking a new Cantonese station in Toronto

But it is apparently not very new. . . Thanks to Simon Li’s blog, I’m following Joe Tay aka Jeng Ging Gei, along with his colleagues Tam Ga Kei and Chan Ding Bong over to Toronto Chinese Radio/Canadian Chinese Broadcast. I’d been wondering what happened to them, along with Simon Li, following their resignation from [...]

Lydia Shum, comedienne, dead at 60

Just heard it on RTHK 1 in Hong Kong. She’d been in poor health for some time. You can read about her on Wikipedia. If that doesn’t scare you into adopting a more healthy lifestyle I don’t know what will. I’m tremendously saddened for her family, esp. her daughter.

And the winner is

. . .the 2.2GHz Intel Core Duo Macbook, along with a 4GB upgrade via OWC. Why the Macbook? Weren’t we just talking about the iMac? Well, to begin with, it was $200 off, being refurb, and hadn’t had any issues with refurb in the past, not that that is any indicator of future performance, but [...]
