About

I’m an Asian American of Cantonese and specifically Toisanese descent, which is a famous emigrant county in the southern province of Guangdong, China. On my father’s side, I can trace my family’s history back 900 years to the common ancestor of the clan. Four generations of my family have come here over the last hundred years and washed America’s clothes, cooked for America, and worked in America’s stores and factories. In the old country, when we weren’t farming or fishing, members of my family defended the Republic from enemies foreign and domestic, and served in the civil service of the people of Hong Kong under the colonial administration.

I studied at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, the University of Melbourne, Australia, and the University of California, Los Angeles, from which I have a MA in Asian American Studies. I happen to be President of the Chicago Chinese American Historical Society, an entirely volunteer based organization dedicated to the dissemination of Chinese American history in Chicago and the midwest in general. However, nothing I say here is necessarily representative of the viewpoint of the Society.

I live, work, and occasionally play in the most beautiful, segregated, and corrupt city in the world: Chicago, Illinois. I am a student of Sifu Andrew Kong, of Kong’s Siu Lum P’ai Kung Fu Association, in Machesney Park, IL, which teaches hung gar and choy lay fut, Cantonese martial arts traditions. I occasionally flee to Toronto, Canada to regain my sense of sanity. Also, I am, allegedly, an ESFJ. It’s the Helping personality in me that wants to provide practical solutions for people.
