Summary: Little City Foundation for books; checking St Vincent De Paul and Salvation Army for furnishings; might recycle the appliances when we get rid of the old fridge.
So, re: my ten boxes of books up north, I was looking towards Bridge to Asia to donate a load of them, but, that would incur a drive to River Grove and I believe many of these books are not useful to them, including many engineering and business texts from the time when my parents attended the local junior college and at IIT because their educational credentials were not accepted in the US. We’re talking books that have sat in our basement for nearly 30 years. I was looking at the Brandeis Book Sale, but it closed last year; I believe it is now being replaced by the Little City Foundation, and I’m going to make my inquiry there. I have to say that ChicagoRecycling.org’s material is not very up-to-date, many of the links are broken and some of the information is now incorrect. In addition, it’s just not easy to find the information we’re looking for, which is, where do I go to get rid of some of this stuff.
That leaves recycling of items like the furniture, which came in the 1970s, when we first moved to the suburbs, and the appliances: we have three refrigerators, two in the basement, one of which appears to be an old 1950s Westinghouse one, as well as a late-80s Zenith TV in a wood cabinet, and my old Aiwa stereo, which like my friend K’s Aiwa, has lost CD playing function and the controls on the front are also acting up. While we’re at it we might want to lose the bigass bookcase speakers that came with it, since we never really used them. I believe I will call the St Vincent De Paul Society and the Salvation Army to see what they will accept.
