On sinus infections, snow, suckiness

Like my friend E. says, you don’t get to choose when you or a loved one gets sick. Having said that couldn’t have picked a worse time of year to be ill. And, for whatever reason, physiology has ensured that when I catch cold it invariably becomes what I now recognize to be a sinus infection, which this time, not only laid me low for a full week and a half, but also resulted in coughs so violent that I actually lost a filling. Yes, that’s a first. So there are some notes for this whole experience. Pseudoephedrine is superior to phenylephrine: the feelings of anxiety and shortness of breath that resulted from the new phenyl reformulation wasn’t worth it for me. I’ll show up with my ID anyday, I’m not making meth in my house. And, we need to recognize and attack the problem sooner. Today I actually feel well enough to throw a few rear-leg kicks and run a few punching combos. Sticking with the Wal-Phed to clear out the nasal passages, aspirin or acetaminophen for the aches and pains. Day cold/flu gelcaps work better. Cough syrup only if absolutely necessary, night caps/Nyquil to knock out and be productive the next day.

Now I’m looking down the street and seeing that Chinatown is pretty much snowed in this morning. No doubt families will try and come down anyway — it is our busiest time of week — but it’s 9AM and what should be a street lined with cars is instead lined with snow. Sucks, sucks, Chicago winter sucks. But I’m glad we’re actually having snow this winter. No snow would be too weird.
