It’s appalling. Frankly appalling. And that goes for maths, sciences and critical reasoning tasks as well. Apropos to one of my clients right now, we’re dealing with generations of very very smart young people with advanced education and yet they still can’t seem to figure out the math when it comes to paying for their education. And because apparently life is long and youth is forever they take scads out more than they ought to and then complain that even with a good paying job they’re living on cat food in the worst crime besotten part of a city. God knows I deferred the hell out of my loans for the longest time, until I got fed up with it and decided to take them on head on. Knowing what I know now, it seems clear that I should have done the math. We all should have. Perhaps we were surrounded by people for whom the only thing that mattered was getting accepted at three or four Ivy League schools and then worry about paying for them later. Perhaps we did what we were told in high school and yet were given short shrift on the planning of paying for college part. Perhaps this is part of youth: serial denial of responsibility. But, sooner or later, the day comes when you can’t hide from the things you’ve done anymore.
